SUMMARY:Children Protection Training
DESCRIPTION:A training to help protect children from sexual abuse will be held in May at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. The event is open to the public. \nThe program will be presented on Saturday\, May 4\, from 3-5pm at St. Andrew\, 140 Gathering Place Lane\, Iowa City. It is aimed at all who spend time with children and youth: Parents\, grandparents\, church staffs and volunteers\, Scout leaders\, and paid or volunteer teachers at day cares\, preschools\, schools\, churches\, and extracurricular programs and activities. \nThe program will be presented by Sarah Leckband\, a facilitator at the University of Iowa’s Rape Victim Advocacy Program in Iowa City. The program\, called Darkness To Light\, equips adults to help prevent\, recognize\, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program website\, darkness2light.org\, says 1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday–this means that whether you work with youth\, are a parent\, or are simply a member of a community\, it is highly likely that someone you know or care for has experienced\, or is currently experiencing\, child sexual abuse. \nThe training is free but registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Iowa Wesleyan University is excited to announce the 2019 Clifford and Maxine Manning Annual Lecture Series:\nSunday\, April 7 from 1:30 to 5:30 pm\nIowa Wesleyan Chapel Auditorium.\nThe Manning Lecture Series brings a distinguished speaker in religion to our campus each year. \n“Real Conversation: Migration in Your Community.”\nWe are thrilled that Rev. Alexia Salvatierra has agreed to present the keynote address. She is a Lutheran pastor and a dynamic\, sought-after speaker who has been engaged with social justice concerns for over 35 years. She has been a national leader in the areas of working poverty and immigration\, including the co-founding of the national Evangelical Immigration Table. She has been involved in community development programs\, congregational and community organizing\, and legislative advocacy. She is co-author of the book Faith-Rooted Organizing: Mobilizing the Church in Service to the World. \nRev. Salvatierra has been awarded the Changemaker Award from the Liberty Hill Foundation\, the Stanton Fellowship from the Durfee Foundation\, the Amos Award from Sojourners\, the Giants of Justice Award from CLUE LA\, and the Prime Mover Fellowship from the Hunt Alternatives Fund. \nSchedule of Events:\n1:30 Keynote Address\, Rev.
