Last spring, in the early hours of a stormy late May morning, we were literally jolted awake by a blinding bolt of lightning and simultaneous explosion of thunder. The bolt had certainly struck close by, but we did not realize how close until we smelled the charred air and heard sirens approaching. A couple of houses down from ours, flames were already devouring the upstairs.

“It’s all about relationships.” We hear this mantra in parking lot conversations, read it in responses on social media, and it surely does sound meaningful. But what does it really mean?
How has it come to pass, I wonder to myself, that we have allowed the grievances, the business in these rooms to grow so large that there is space left only for a very small God?
What I have realized yet again is that establishing and maintaining Beloved Community is challenging, but more than that, it is continual. We must establish Beloved Community over and over and over again.
